Real Stars
is a charity organization. It is a Christian non-governmental organization. It
was registered with the government in April 2007. We are not a children’s
orphanage, we are a non-profit social organization helping individual children
in Nairobi and surrounding provinces to get education through fundraising.
The children in our program come from a very poor
background without enough money for even the most basic of needs such as food,
shelter and education.
Real Stars was founded by the Kenyan Social Worker Rose
Munyiva Muiu who has worked with street children for 14 years. She is the
director of the organization and is supported by several members including:
Gideon Ochieng' (Coordinator), Clare Chepruto (Advocate), Jacob Peters
(Missionary), Peninah Machoka (Lawyer) Joyce Mcharo and James Kaniaru (Architect).
In Kenya, children must, by law, go to school. However,
only those whose parents can afford to pay for it do so.
Without education children get stuck in their parent’s
poverty and cannot have hope of alleviating their situation and thus the cycle
is repeated. Because of the high school fees and the large number of children
in a family, parents are unable to educate their children.
There is very high pressure on the few members of a family
who do have employment to be able to support their children or siblings.
For this reason education is one of the greatest gifts one
can give a child as it can never be taken from them.
Without education, children and teenagers turn to the
streets for survival which inadvertently becomes their home. This leads to
lives of crime, unwanted pregnancies, illnesses and/or Aids. For this reason, financial
support for education is a priority for us at Real Stars.
Children and Teenagers
Some of the children are orphaned or abandoned into the
slums of Nairobi and the surrounding Provinces. Others live with their aunts or
grandparents, who are unable to give them the support they need, because their
parents are deceased. We at Real Stars help the children get the education they
need and get them off the streets.
We have seen in each child a lot of potential that can be
developed through practical help and support.
When we find a new sponsor, the child then comes into our
program. We first make contact with the child and do a background check before
proceeding to the next step of the program.
How we work at Real Stars
The children in our program are introduced to us through
word of mouth from neighbors, friends, churches etc. We then visit the children
in their homes in order to find out what they need.
Our Aim
Our goal is to show the poor and helpless families
Christian love, to help their children get better education and future
job/business prospects.
Our Program /Activities
We have all range of children both small and youth age
therefore we cater for each level. We offer education to children from primary
till university and some of our children are in Nazarene, USIU, Kenya
Polytechnic, Catholic and Mt. Kenya Universities. The sponsor money goes
directly to paying for each child’s school fees, transportation, accommodation,
school uniform, school books and extras.
During our feeding programme we visit different homes and
help various families/children through buying food items to sustain them. Despite
mentoring the children we also pay school fees for them and walk with each
child throughout their schooling and mentor.
We also help some of the young adults who have gone
through the program to start a small business such as cafes, kiosks, small
workshops etc.
We try to help each child stand on his/her own two feet in
order to be self-sufficient and independent.
In a month we serve over 100 children. We are currently
supporting over 40 children and teenagers in various schools around the
country, and over 50 more are on the waiting list.
Financing sponsorship
For you as a sponsor it is very important to know what has
happened with the money that you have invested, which is why we would like to
explain what happens with your money.
Our organization works together with the German
organization Stiftueng “Kinderherzen e.V.” which sends the money from Germany to
us in Kenya. If you take up sponsorship the approximate amount you will be
paying is between 30 and 45 Euro. Five percent (5%) will be taken by
Kinderherzen for Administration monthly from any donation given and five percent (5%) by Real Stars. This money
is used for school fees, school stationery (books, uniform, pens etc.)
transportation, pocket money, and medical expenses.
At the start of sponsorship we expect an administration
fee of 15 Euro for photos, files, letters and stamps for the child. After this
all your sponsorship money goes directly to the child, our volunteers get
financial support from their own sponsors.
What we will do for you as a sponsor
For you as a sponsor it is necessary to get information
about the child you are sponsoring, how he/she is doing in school, his/her
progress and general updates. We will send you a report every four months to
inform you about your child and once a year we will send you a photo of
him/her.
What you can do
Perhaps you will ask what more you can do for your child
besides sending financial support. A good thing to do would be to send letters
and correspondence to him/her through which you can provide encouragement or
mentorship. If so, you may send all snail mail to:
